OK, let’s get the transparency thing over with first. We offer hosted Microsoft Exchange, and we’d love you all to buy it. We have reasons, however, why we believe Exchange, backed up by our personal service, is a better way to go. After all, even folks with an interest in an issue can be right. So here’s our take on Gmail versus hosted Exchange with our service, in the context of a nonprofit looking for the best hosted solution to replace Exchange on their local server.
Backup and Security
Recent incidents have revealed some weaknesses in Gmail’s approach to backup and security. About 40,000 users temporarily lost all their mail, and possibly any that wasn’t backed up to tape, in February. Others have lost their mail accounts forever. Some have had their identities stolen. Some have had spam sent from their Gmail accounts. Many have mentioned receiving disappointing service and support. An excellent recent blog post by Atlantic Magazine’s James Fallows describes the situation, but a quick

Functionality
Many features available in Exchange are not available in Gmail. There are lots of feature comparisons on the Web. Here’s one.
Familiarity
Your users won’t have to learn a new application
With hosted Exchange at CGNET, the mail is immediately replicated to at least one more database, and the servers are backed up to disk as well.
Compatibility
Some organizations have found that Gmail is not able to be seamlessly integrated with their Global Address list, for example, the CGIAR. Here is their Google Apps case study. Many CGIAR centers are now moving their Exchange from local servers to hosting at CGNET.
Hosted Exchange at CGNET has full compatibility with your Active Directory implementation.
Service and Support
Gmail does not have personalized service in the case of an outage, and reaching tech support is limited to correspondence via email. End user support is limited to online only.
CGNET has live 24/7/365 support and escalation to an Exchange specialist within half an hour, if necessary. We also provide end-user support.
Price
Prices of hosted Exchange have been dropping, while Gmail’s price for nonprofits outside the U.S. (who must buy Google Apps for Business) has remained the same. Thus, there is less of a price difference than there used to be.
